Everyone is suddenly forced to be a one-stop-shop advertising agency in the digital age of social media and AI. Independent content creators and business owners are no longer allowed to just make things; they now have to run a full-scale media network right out of their pockets. It begs the question, are we overcomplicating things? The iconic 90's film, "Boomerang" may have left an unintentional easter egg of prophetic wisdom from the late great John Witherspoon, "You've got to coordinate!" Ha! – No seriously. Maybe I should stretch before I reach. Nonetheless, follow me. Sure, in Boomerang, they were creating TV ads, but when was the last time you actually watched a TV ad without hitting skip? They without a doubt still serve a purpose depending on the context, but so much in the world has evolved since then.

Here's what I do know: business leaders today are tasked with a double burden. They must craft a great 360 product experience, and they must simultaneously act as the marketing engine of their business. While newness can be overwhelming, it is imperative that we stay competitive and informed as technology is advancing. That's where I step in. Coordination is merely another word for infrastructure which is the foundation of any successful business. When I first started my career in advertising I remember SEO being a priority skill for the most stable jobs in the industry. Today, the sentiment of the feature still remains .... discoverability. It has simply evolved and it is up to us to understand how we meet humans where they are in order to connect with them.

Over the past few years, the marketing battleground has shifted. Founders are no longer solely managing brick-and-mortar logistics with a dash of SEO; they are forced to conquer an entirely new, invisible terrain of algorithmic discoverability in an era of e-commerce with GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). Recently, a user in an entrepreneur and small business Facebook group with over 1.1M members asked, "What's the most frustrating part of content creation for small business owners" to which Rose Andrew replied, "The most significant obstacle I face is algorithm limitations; for instance, when I post job-related content, the platform often displays it to individuals uninterested in employment opportunities, rather than connecting with those actively seeking jobs, products, or professional guidance."

"Don't be a Blockbuster in a Netflix world."

This shift unveils a deeper, contemporary human behavior. As physical communities continue to fragment, we attempt to solve our yearning for connection and clarity via third-party digital recommendations and algorithmic consensus. According to McKinsey & Company Research, 50% of consumers already use AI-powered search today and by 2028 $780B of consumer spend will flow through AI-powered search. Whether you agree or not, this is where human behavior is shifting today and we have a responsibility to simply stay informed. Don't be a Blockbuster in a Netflix world.

While traditionalists mock these modern entrepreneurs by asking how their "little" business is going, the reality is that we all quietly participate in the para-social dynamics of modern consumerism. But lets be real for a sec: I can speak for the majority of us when I say we're all a bit overstimulated and quite frankly tired of getting online and feeling like we're in a never ending mall aisle with an infinite amount of kiosks. The influencers have turned into the Avon lady. While content creators are still necessary, it is clear you cannot survive today as a business solely on influencer partnerships. That leaves a gap for your business to shine.

To get started, I recommend the following on how to win by investing in GEO to meet your consumers as they are seeking answers for their questions:

  1. Diversify your content visibility
AI pulls from the entire web ecosystem to build its answers. Discovery requires your strategy to live everywhere the data lives: across owned channels, third-party media, and digital communities. McKinsey data highlights that in major consumer sectors, over 65 percent of the sources cited by AI engines are publishers, independent blogs, and user-generated forums. Seed the entire landscape.
  2. Structure your content for machine readability

Surfacing in AI search requires balancing brand romance with technical clarity. Focus on deploying high-value information, organizing your digital footprint with sharp headings, and using precise language. Every piece of text must be structurally clean for LLM crawlers to easily scrape, cite, and trust.

  3. Treat GEO as an operational priority

This is a permanent infrastructure shift. Winning requires making AI discoverability a strategic priority across the entire organization by uniting marketing, technical SEO, and customer experience under one unified framework. Establish real GEO metrics and continuously update your underlying technology to stay ahead of ongoing algorithm optimization.

The digital profile has officially morphed into the contemporary portfolio. The real question is are you ready to be found? Like most things in life, as technology evolves, the fundamentals of advertising usually boomerang around in the business of marketing. It's a subtle reminder that "you've got to coordinate" organizational cohesion if you want to remain competitive and lucrative.
